<div class="ms-rteThemeForeColor-2-5">The astonishing new McLaren P1™, has been unveiled in production form at the Geneva Motor Show.  During the press conference McLaren Automotive outlined the clear goal for the latest offering – to be the best driver’s car in the world on road and track. To achieve this objective, McLaren is using all of its 50 years of racing experience and success, especially in the fields of aerodynamics and lightweight carbon fibre technology. <div class="ms-rteThemeForeColor-2-5"> </div>
<div class="ms-rteThemeForeColor-2-5">The result is a car that has an unprecedented amount of downforce for a road vehicle: similar levels to a GT3 racing car and yet with even greater ground effect. This downforce not only boosts cornering and braking performance. It also helps balance, stability and driveability at all speeds. <div class="ms-rteThemeForeColor-2-5"> </div>
<div class="ms-rteThemeForeColor-2-5">McLaren introduced the carbon fibre chassis to the world of Formula 1 in 1981 with the MP4/1, and we had the first carbon-bodied road car,’ says McLaren Automotive Executive Chairman Ron Dennis. ‘We have always been at the cutting edge of vehicle aerodynamics, and all of this experience has gone into the new McLaren P1™. Twenty years ago, with the McLaren F1, we raised the supercar performance bar. With the McLaren P1™, we have redefined it once more.’ </div>
<div class="ms-rteThemeForeColor-2-5">  <div class="ms-rteThemeForeColor-2-5">The best driver’s car in the world must also have exceptional straight-line performance and instant throttle response. To deliver this, the McLaren P1™ uses an innovative IPAS petrol-electric powertrain comprising a substantially revised 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine, coupled to a single electric motor, collectively known as M838TQ. Combined power output is 916 PS (903 hp). As important as absolute power is the electric motor’s ability to provide instant torque, making the powertrain superbly responsive. It is also amazingly efficient. Carbon dioxide emissions are less than 200g/km, and it can cover more than 10 km in electric-only mode.</div>
<div class="ms-rteThemeForeColor-2-5"> </div>
<div class="ms-rteThemeForeColor-2-5">Top speed is electronically limited to 350 km/h (217 mph), with the 0-100 km/h standing start acceleration taking less than three seconds .The McLaren P1™ will power from rest to 200 km/h in less than seven seconds, and on to 300 km/h in less than 17 seconds – a full five seconds quicker than the McLaren F1. </div>
<div class="ms-rteThemeForeColor-2-5"> </div>
<div class="ms-rteThemeForeColor-2-5">‘We believe the McLaren P1™ is the most exciting, capable, technologically advanced and most dynamically accomplished supercar ever made,’ says McLaren P1™ programme director, Paul Mackenzie.  ‘It may not be the fastest car in the world in absolute top speed, but that was never our goal. Rather, we believe it is the fastest ever production car on a racing circuit, a much more important technical statement, and far more relevant for on-road driving. It is a true test of a supercar’s all-round ability. Plus many owners will use the car on the circuit, at special track and test days.’</div>
<div class="ms-rteThemeForeColor-2-5"> </div>
<div class="ms-rteThemeForeColor-2-5"><img alt="Lifestyle_Sea_doors down.jpg" src="http://www.mclarenautomotive.com/uk/insider/Lists/Photos/Lifestyle_Sea_doors%20down.jpg" style="margin:5px"><br></div>
<div class="ms-rteThemeForeColor-2-5">The astonishing technology developed for the McLaren P1™ includes active aerodynamics and adjustable suspension – both now banned in Formula 1, due to being seen to give a performance advantage. Airflow is optimised around the body through the use of an active wing and underbody devices. The adjustable rear wing can extend from the bodywork by 120mm on road, up to 300mm on the race track, maximising the levels of downforce. The wing is directly inspired by Formula 1 design, with the intersection of the double element rear wing and design of the endplates being the same as that on the 2008 championship winning MP4-23. </div>
<div class="ms-rteThemeForeColor-2-5"> </div>
<div class="ms-rteThemeForeColor-2-5">In addition, the McLaren P1™ also features adjustable ride height as part of the new hydro-pneumatic suspension. The revolutionary RaceActive Chassis Control (RCC) can lower the car by 50mm in Race mode, to produce ground effect aerodynamics. It also features adaptive spring rates, roll control, pitch control and damping, all providing a huge range of adjustment, making the McLaren P1™ perfect for either road or track. In Race mode, the spring rates stiffen by 300 per cent, allowing the McLaren P1™ to corner at more than 2g.</div>
<div class="ms-rteThemeForeColor-2-5"> </div>
<div class="ms-rteThemeForeColor-2-5">Formula 1-inspired technology permeates the McLaren P1™. The revolutionary new carbon fibre MonoCage monocoque forms a complete structure incorporating the vehicle’s roof and its distinctive snorkel air intake - a styling feature inspired by the McLaren F1 road car.</div>
<div class="ms-rteThemeForeColor-2-5"> </div>
<div class="ms-rteThemeForeColor-2-5">McLaren is an acknowledged world leader in carbon technology. The material offers lightness, strength and rigidity – improving performance, safety, handling, agility, durability, efficiency and ride comfort. The body panels of the McLaren P1™ are also made from lightweight yet strong carbon composite, with their complex shapes tuned for optimal aerodynamics.</div>
<div class="ms-rteThemeForeColor-2-5"> </div>
<div class="ms-rteThemeForeColor-2-5">The McLaren P1™ was designed from the outset to prioritise aerodynamic performance – just like a Formula 1 car. As with a Formula 1 car, wind tunnel testing and CFD (computational fluid dynamics) aerodynamic modelling were used to optimise the aerodynamic flow, both to provide incredible levels of downforce and to cool the powertrain. The result is 600kg of downforce at well below maximum speed (257 km/h / 161 mph) in Race mode, which is considerably higher than most other high performance supercars, and more in line with the levels of downforce generated by a GT3 racing car. This downforce improves the car’s cornering ability, especially in high speed corners. Balance, agility and controllability are all outstanding.</div>
<div class="ms-rteThemeForeColor-2-5"> </div>
<div class="ms-rteThemeForeColor-2-5"><img alt="Family_Dynamic_Track.jpg" src="http://www.mclarenautomotive.com/uk/insider/Lists/Photos/Family_Dynamic_Track.jpg" style="margin:5px"><br><br>Other areas of Formula 1 technology evident on the McLaren P1™ include the revolutionary layered carbon ceramic brakes, developed for the road by McLaren’s Formula 1 partners Akebono. The highly efficient IPAS (Instant Power Assist System) is a development of KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) used on Formula 1 cars, while DRS (Drag Reduction System) is also used on the McLaren P1™, giving extra power and straight-line speed both at the touch of a button. Brake Steer – an outlawed Formula 1 technology – is also used on the McLaren P1™. It improves cornering behaviour and cornering speed.</div>
<div class="ms-rteThemeForeColor-2-5"> </div>
<div class="ms-rteThemeForeColor-2-5">‘The carryover Formula 1 technology on the McLaren P1™ is palpable,’ notes Dick Glover, Research Director. ‘From the aero work, to the carbon fibre MonoCage monocoque and body, to the active suspension [now banned in Formula 1] to the Brake Steer [now banned in Formula 1], to the turbocharging [which comes back into Formula 1 in 2014], to many other engine examples including the low crankshaft and dry sump lubrication.’</div>
<div class="ms-rteThemeForeColor-2-5"> </div>
<div class="ms-rteThemeForeColor-2-5">The IPAS petrol-electric powertrain also ties in with upcoming Formula 1 regulations. From next year (2014), Formula 1 cars will have hybrid power, including an electric mode for the pit lane.</div>
<div class="ms-rteThemeForeColor-2-5"> </div>
<div class="ms-rteThemeForeColor-2-5">The McLaren P1™ name is also inspired by Formula 1. P1 refers to ‘first place’ or ‘position one’ – particularly fitting as McLaren has 182 Grand Prix victories and 155 pole positions to-date, in its 47-year Formula 1 history. There is also heritage in that name: the McLaren F1 was initially known internally within McLaren as Project 1, or P1. <p> </p>
<div><img alt="R_34_Static_Monaco.jpg" src="http://www.mclarenautomotive.com/uk/insider/Lists/Photos/R_34_Static_Monaco.jpg" style="margin:5px"><br><br>Despite the huge performance, the McLaren P1™ is also a refined and comfortable high-speed supercar. ‘It is designed to be driven to the racing circuit, with great levels of comfort and refinement,’ says McLaren P1™ programme director, Paul Mackenzie. ‘And then to be used on the racing circuit, where it will offer an experience matched only by purpose-built race cars.’</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Adds Chief Design Engineer Dan Parry-Williams: ‘It’s fast on the racetrack but still fast, comfortable and refined on the road.</div>
<div> </div>
<div class="ms-rteThemeForeColor-2-5">‘The brief was to make a refined, fuel efficient car that is faster than anything else on the racetrack but that is also as fast as anything you could use on the road while not compromising ride or comfort.’</div>
<div> </div>
<div>The ownership experience with the McLaren P1™ will be as special as the car itself,  Greg Levine, McLaren Automotive Sales and Marketing Director explains: “Owners will become part of the McLaren family, if they aren’t already. To maintain exclusivity, we have closely monitored demand, and announced a production number of just 375 units – a figure that will ensure the McLaren P1™ will remain a rarity and, if spotted on the road, an unforgettable sight.”<br></div>

<div class="ExternalClassF7167885544843B9ACE91A0293EC243A">The McLaren P1™ will have the combined force of two highly-efficient powerplants, offering the optimum mix of superb throttle response, day-to-day drivability and top speed. A mid-mounted 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine and a highly effective electric motor give a combined output of 916PS (903 bhp) and a maximum torque figure of 900Nm, ensuring instantaneous throttle response through the rev range, more akin to a naturally aspirated engine. Emissions of less than 200g/km on the combined cycle are reduced to zero in full electric drive mode, while the Formula 1-derived DRS and IPAS technologies offer an increase in straight-line speed and an instant boost of power.</div>
<div class="ExternalClassF7167885544843B9ACE91A0293EC243A"> </div>
<div class="ExternalClassF7167885544843B9ACE91A0293EC243A">The 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine in the McLaren P1™ is a new version of the familiar M838T unit, that has been significantly upgraded to optimise cooling and durability under the higher loads. The engine block has a unique casting to incorporate the electric motor. The petrol engine produces 737PS (727 bhp) at 7,500rpm, and 720Nm of torque from 4,000rpm. To optimise efficiency of the petrol engine, extensive testing and development work has always been carried out with McLaren Automotive technology partner Mobil 1 on lubrication and hydraulic fluids.</div>
<div class="ExternalClassF7167885544843B9ACE91A0293EC243A"> </div>
<div class="ExternalClassF7167885544843B9ACE91A0293EC243A">The lightweight electric motor, developed by the McLaren Electronics arm of the Group, produces 179PS (176 bhp), and is unique to the McLaren P1™. The motor produces maximum torque of 260Nm instantly from a standstill, greatly increasing the throttle response of the McLaren P1™, and peak combined torque of 900Nm is delivered from just 4,000 rpm. In addition to this, the McLaren-developed ‘boost’ system, IPAS, provides up to 179PS instantly. The instant response of the electric motor provides a sharper throttle response more associated with a normally aspirated engine, and the significantly enhanced air-charging system enables the McLaren P1™ to have more top-end power – the perfect combination for high performance. </div>
<div class="ExternalClassF7167885544843B9ACE91A0293EC243A"> </div>
<div class="ExternalClassF7167885544843B9ACE91A0293EC243A">The electric motor is mounted directly onto the engine, and all drive is channelled through the dual-clutch seven-speed gearbox to drive the rear wheels. Thus, the electric motor and 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine work seamlessly together, providing more than just added ultimate power and torque. </div>
<div class="ExternalClassF7167885544843B9ACE91A0293EC243A"> </div>
<div class="ExternalClassF7167885544843B9ACE91A0293EC243A">A further benefit is that the e-motor can provide faster upshifts. This is achieved through the application of instant negative torque at the point of shift, making the engine revs drop as quickly and efficiently as possible to the required engine speed for the upshift. </div>
<div class="ExternalClassF7167885544843B9ACE91A0293EC243A"> </div>
<div class="ExternalClassF7167885544843B9ACE91A0293EC243A">In addition to the obsessive weight-saving measures demonstrated throughout the McLaren P1™, so too is the optimisation of usable energy. When off-throttle the electric motor provides additional drag torque, recovering energy to the battery that would otherwise be lost to the brakes. <br></div>

<div class="ExternalClass98C532F3D70E4596927F389C9265277D">The McLaren P1™ has a clear goal: to be the best driver’s car in the world on road and track. In order to achieve this, performance and handling are key, but to extract the best from the aerodynamic bodyshape and the groundbreaking technology beneath the carbon fibre exterior, the driver has to feel comfortable and in control. For this reason, the cabin of the McLaren P1™ is fully focused on the driver, and is clear from clutter and distraction as these first images show. </div>
<div class="ExternalClass98C532F3D70E4596927F389C9265277D"> </div>
<div class="ExternalClass98C532F3D70E4596927F389C9265277D">The interior of the McLaren P1™ offers the driver and passenger a cocooning, efficiently packaged, comfortable cabin. The interior feels like the cockpit of a fighter jet, complete with glass canopy overhead and, with a windscreen deeper than it is wide, visibility is optimised. This makes the car all the easier to plant on road and track.</div>
<div>Light weight – as with the rest of the car – is a priority, and switchgear is kept to a minimum, yet the McLaren P1™ retains luxury features such as full climate control, satellite navigation and a bespoke sound system, developed from the outset with Meridian.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>McLaren is a pioneer in the use of carbon fibre, and it features extensively throughout the McLaren P1™, not least in the MonoCage chassis and the aerodynamically-shaped body panels, but also inside the two-seat cabin. It is the lightest possible material, while offering the strength desirable for safety and structural integrity, and is used for the dashboard, floor, headlining, doors, rockers and a single piece is shaped for the central control unit to further optimise weight. Attention to detail within the interior of the McLaren P1™ is such that, to further reduce weight, the top layer of resin has been removed, to leave the carbon non-lacquered for a more natural look…and saves a further 1.5kg.</div>

Carpet is offered, as an option, but when chosen, it is fitted with a special lightweight backing.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>The racing bucket seats use the minimum amount of foam, are encased in ultra-thin carbon fibre shells, and mounted on lightweight brackets and runners, contributing to an overall weight of just 10.5kg each. The seat backs are fixed to 28 degrees from the vertical, but can be set to 32 degrees to make them more suitable for racing as it will give more helmet head room. The height of the seat will be custom set to suit the driver and passenger, and can be subsequently adjusted in the workshop. Fixings for a six-point race harnesses are </div>

<div> </div>
<div>The steering wheel diameter is as technically precise as a McLaren racing driver’s wheel. This is because past McLaren world champions’ grips were modelled on a CAD system and scanned to produce an exact replica. The rim is finished in Alcantara, with carbon fibre inserts.</div>

<p class="ms-rteThemeForeColor-2-0"><strong>Introducing the McLaren P1</strong></p>
<div>McLaren Automotive will use its first ever international motor show appearance to preview its next generation ultimate supercar – the McLaren P1 – which takes much of its technological and spiritual inspiration from the company’s Racing division.  The McLaren P1 has one simple goal: to be the best driver’s car in the world on road and track. </div>
<div> </div>
<div>At the Paris Motor Show, Mondial de l'Automobile 2012, the McLaren P1 is previewed as a design study. Next year a production version, which the company aims to put on sale within 12 months, will be revealed.<br> <br></div>
<div>‘The McLaren P1 will be the result of 50 years of racing and road car heritage,’ says McLaren Automotive Executive Chairman Ron Dennis. ‘Twenty years ago we raised the supercar performance bar with the McLaren F1 and our goal with the McLaren P1 is to redefine it once again.’<br></div>
<div class="ms-rteThemeForeColor-2-0"><div> </div>
<div>‘Our aim is not necessarily to be the fastest in absolute top speed but to be the quickest and most rewarding series production road car on a circuit’, says McLaren Automotive Managing Director Antony Sheriff. ‘It is the true test of a supercar’s all round ability and a much more important technical statement. Our goal is to make the McLaren P1 the most exciting, most capable, most technologically advanced and most dynamically accomplished supercar ever made.’<br></div>

<div> </div>
<div>McLaren Automotive announces the launch of its second model in the MP4-12C family: the stunning new 12C Spider.  With a lightweight, high powered engine developing an incredible 625 PS (616 bhp), unique RHT folding roof system that may be operated while on the move, and carbon ‘MonoCell’ chassis identical to that of the groundbreaking 12C, the 12C Spider is a luxury convertible sports car that offers prospective owners a unique combination of spectacular performance with remarkable usability. </div>
<div> </div>
<div>Antony Sheriff, McLaren Automotive Managing Director said: “I am really excited to announce that the new 12C Spider is now available to order at new McLaren retailers worldwide. The launch of our second model is an exciting milestone in the growth of our company. &quot;</div>
<div> </div>
<div>“While the 12C is the technological essence of a race car, the 12C Spider incorporates an additional dimension. 12C Spider owners will love the opportunity to lower the roof and hear the unhindered howl of a V8 twin turbo engine at full throttle. It undoubtedly enhances an already euphoric 12C driving experience.  The 12C Spider delivers all the thrills characteristic of a high performance roadster, and yet transforms into a raucous track beast at the flick of a switch. I can’t wait to see it on road and track with customers later this year.”</div></div>

<div><strong>Best-in-class performance:</strong></div>
<p>
<div>The 12C Spider’s impressive 625 PS output from its bespoke 3.8-litre V8 twin turbo engine is transmitted to the car’s rear driven wheels through a 7 Speed SSG dual-clutch transmission, which itself provides lightning-fast gear changes through rocker-mounted shift paddles affixed to the rear of the steering wheel.  A clear view of the 12C Spider’s lightweight M838T power plant is available through a glass screen positioned behind the tonneau cover.</div>
<p>
<div>Vehicle dynamics technology including Brake Steer, ProActive Chassis Control and the unique McLaren Airbrake combine to offer sublime comfort in all driving conditions; and yet deliver race car performance and handling on track.</div>

<div> </div>
<div><strong>Technical Highlights:</strong></div>
<p>
<div>McLaren is a carbon pioneer. In 1981 McLaren gave a debut to a carbon fibre monocoque chassis in Formula 1 with the launch of the MP4/1 race car, and in 1992 the legendary McLaren F1 introduced the advanced composite technology to the world of road cars.  It was natural then for McLaren Automotive engineers to apply its carbon expertise when developing the groundbreaking one-piece moulded chassis of the 12C. With the 12C designed originally as a convertible, its 75kg ‘MonoCell’ requires no additional strengthening for it to feature in the 12C Spider. The result is a sports car almost identical to its fixed roof equivalent in performance terms, and weighing only 40kg more with the addition of a convertible roof system. </div>
<div> </div>
<div>The Retractable Hard Top of the 12C Spider is operated using a switch in the lower section of the centre console inside the cabin, taking less than 17 seconds to raise or lower. Unlike many other convertible models, the roof can be operated whilst the 12C Spider is moving at speeds of up to 30 kph.</div>
<p>
<div>Behind driver and passenger sits a rear windscreen which may also be electronically lowered and raised. With the roof lowered this acts as wind deflector to minimise disturbance to the 12C Spider’s occupants. With the roof raised the rear window can be lowered, allowing the exhilarating noise of the 12C Spider’s V8 twin turbo engine to flood the cabin on demand at any time.  </div>
<p>
<div>With the roof raised the area under the tonneau can be used as an additional luggage area which provides 52 litres of useful storage space.  Bespoke luggage has been designed specifically to fit this space and is supplied as standard with every 12C Spider. </div>
<div> </div>
<div>The 12C Spider also features a passive Roll Over Protection System to maximise occupant safety. Each buttress contains a steel structure designed to absorb impact energy and protect both driver and passenger.</div>

<div>  </div>
<div>The 12C Spider is based on the same super stiff carbon fibre MonoCell chassis as its hardtop sibling and so will be just as dynamic to drive.  But removing the roof will dial up the sensations experienced, the emotions felt and the noise heard.  Especially at the speeds the 12C Spider will be capable of.   And true to McLaren’s ethos of offering high performance without compromise, the 12C Spider will be more usable than any car this exciting has a right to be.  </div>
<div> </div>
<div>More information on this new and emotive addition to the McLaren Automotive range will be released in the next few days when ordering commences across the company’s network of retailers.<br></div>

<div>One man used to excitement behind the wheel is Jenson Button.  McLaren questioned him at last weekend’s European Grand Prix about what speed means to him, the connection he feels with the machine he drives and about what he senses when driving a 300 km/h open top car.  But is he talking about his MP4-27 Formula 1 car or the 12C Spider?</div>

<div><img alt="1.jpg" src="http://www.mclarenautomotive.com/uk/insider/Lists/Photos/1.jpg" style="margin:5px"><br><br>McLaren Automotive, rather than resting on its laurels, has instead announced a package of enhancements that will make its 12C high performance sports car even more invigorating to drive yet even easier to live with.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Headlining the changes is a 25PS (25hp) power increase.  It takes the maximum output of the mid mounted, twin turbocharged V8 engine to 625PS (616hp) to give yet more vivid acceleration at track speeds with no loss in efficiency.  Modifications have been made by McLaren’s engineers to the 12C’s engine and SSG transmission increasing responsiveness.  Ease of use, a phrase not often associated with cars of this type, is further improved through a host of detail changes while a wider variety of paint, leather and wheel options give customers yet more scope for personalisation.  The 12C’s unique Intake Sound Generator (ISG) system, which controls the amount of engine intake sound heard in the cabin, is now programmable across three levels in all three Powertrain modes allowing the driver to select the amount of aural drama he or she wants to enjoy, whatever the road.  But one aspect that hasn’t changed is the 12C’s purposeful styling … apart from a subtle revision to the McLaren Speed Marque badge, that is.<br>  <br><img alt="2.jpg" src="http://www.mclarenautomotive.com/uk/insider/Lists/Photos/2.jpg" style="margin:5px"><br><br><img alt="3.jpg" src="http://www.mclarenautomotive.com/uk/insider/Lists/Photos/3.jpg" style="margin:5px"><br></div>
<div>This latest iteration of the 12C, which at launch set a new benchmark among its competitors for power, efficiency and pioneering technology, is available to order now. Customers who have already taken delivery of a 12C are not being neglected, though.  Every 12C owner is being offered a package of upgrades, including the extra 25PS (25hp), at no cost, underlining McLaren’s commitment to its customers ensuring they enjoy owning their 12C as much as they do driving it.  </div>
<p><div>Antony Sheriff, McLaren Automotive Managing Director said: “Given our racing heritage, it is in our nature to continuously seek out improvements. The team at McLaren Automotive recognizes that our existing and future customers deserve the very best product and service we can offer, and the launch of the enhanced 12C reaffirms its position as the most powerful luxury sports car among its competitor set.</div></p>
<div>“We designed and engineered the 12C from a clean sheet of paper, and I am delighted with the innovative technology package created for our first sports car. Our customers love driving a car with technologies and systems that have proved successful in Formula 1 and which create an incredible driving experience in a unique new high performance sports car. New and existing customers will now enjoy an even better experience thanks to the upgrades.”<br></div>

<p style="font-size:11px;background-color:rgb(255,255,255)">The location is a closely guarded secret, and only a handful of people outside of the McLaren staff have ever been allowed through the door. Since Ron Dennis took control of the team in 1981, no McLaren Formula One™ car has been sold on the open market. Instead, those that completed the season's racing have been stored here, in a former factory building somewhere in the south of England. It's known simply as Unit 2, and the reason for the secrecy is apparent as soon as you enter. At its peak, Unit 2 held around 75 of the world's most historic racing cars: the McLarens which, over almost half a century of racing, have won twenty drivers' and constructors' world championships. Their combined value is simply incalculable, but also irrelevant, as they will never be offered for sale.</p>
<p style="font-size:11px;background-color:rgb(255,255,255)">The atmosphere inside is oddly still: racing cars are all about speed and noise yet they are held in suspended animation, looking almost ghostly under their plastic shrouds. Together, they're an astonishing sight for any McLaren enthusiast, or simply for any sports fan. They're painted in some of the most instantly recognizable, genuinely iconic sporting liveries, and their air intakes still bear the names of the greats who drove them, from Senna and Prost to Hamilton and Button.</p>
<p style="font-size:11px;background-color:rgb(255,255,255)">Around them is arranged everything the McLaren engineers need to get them running again: neatly stacked rows of period wheels and tyres; the jacks made to fit each successive design of car, and even long-obsolete laptop computers needed to run the software that some of the cars require. It's a treasure trove, an Aladdin's cave: any McLaren enthusiast simply wouldn't know where to look first.</p>
<p style="font-size:11px;background-color:rgb(255,255,255)"><span><img src="http://www.mclarenautomotive.com/uk/insider/SiteAssets/Lists/Posts/EditPost/Unit%202%20-%202.jpg" alt=""></span> </p>
<p style="font-size:11px;background-color:rgb(255,255,255)">So it wouldn't be fair to keep such extraordinary cars locked away. Some are on loan to the Donington Grand Prix collection at the famous circuit in the English Midlands, scene of many a famous McLaren victory. Others are seen on display and in action at the annual Goodwood Festival of Speed. And if you're fortunate enough to be invited to the McLaren Technology Centre, the jewels of the collection are arranged along the building's stunning central boulevard.</p>
<p style="font-size:11px;background-color:rgb(255,255,255)">Now, with the launch of the 12C, more of those dust sheets are being pulled off and the treasures of Unit 2 will be seen far more widely. McLaren is opening 35 showrooms by the end of 2012 to supply its new sports car and every one will have a Unit 2 car on display when it opens: not a plastic dummy, but a genuine race car: one that bites. </p>
<p style="font-size:11px;background-color:rgb(255,255,255)">The first to be sent out was Lewis Hamilton's 2008 championship-winning MP4/23 which was hung over the entrance to the London showroom at One Hyde Park. Every other McLaren retailer has been allocated a car and McLaren's team of historic experts led by Ian Gosling has prepared them. In some cases the cars are in perfect condition and only need a polish and to have their fluids drained before they can be freighted to their new home. For others, the years have started to show, so the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes paint shop has, with sensitivity, helped to restore them to their full former glory. Ian and his team ensure that they are not just aesthetically perfect but complete, and just as they were when racing. But he admits to a few tricks of the trade: the quick-release steering wheels are well-secured so nobody takes an unauthorized souvenir while they're in transit, and sneaking in an inner tube helps to keep porous old racing rubber at the perfect pressure while parked.</p>
<p style="font-size:11px;margin:0px 0px 10px;background-color:rgb(255,255,255)"><span><img src="http://www.mclarenautomotive.com/uk/insider/SiteAssets/Lists/Posts/EditPost/Unit%202%20-%203.jpg" alt=""></span> </p>
<p style="font-size:11px;background-color:rgb(255,255,255)">In many cases, the cars have a specific link with the location. The dealership in Brussels will get a 2004 MP4/19: Kimi Raikkonen won the Belgian Grand Prix for McLaren that year in that car. Ayrton Senna won the 1993 Monaco Grand Prix in the MP4/8, so that's what you'll see in the principality. James Hunt won the 1976 US Grand Prix in a McLaren M26, you'll find one in the Philadelphia dealership. Not all heritage cars are from Formula 1 competition: Dallas gets a McLaren M16 from the same era, one of the greatest-ever Indy cars with three victories in the legendary race.</p>
<p style="font-size:11px;background-color:rgb(255,255,255)">The importance of some of the cars you will see in the dealerships is magnified by the fact that they may be the sole surviving example of their type; not only are these cars real, but in some cases utterly unique and irreplaceable. For others, the attentions of Ian and his team are an extraordinary reawakening; some cars went straight into Unit 2 after the end of their season and haven't emerged since; the car you see might barely have turned a wheel since it took its last chequered flag. As they emerge, the number of cars kept in storage back at Unit 2 will dwindle to the twenties. But we still can't tell you where it is.</p>

<h1><font color="#ffa500">SINGAPORE BUSINESSMAN PETER LIM INVESTS IN MCLAREN AUTOMOTIVE</font> </h1>
<p class="ExternalClassC5655177CFAD4A5E8F34C56BF570231D">McLaren Automotive, the new high-performance sports car company based at the McLaren Group headquarters in the UK, today announces that Singapore-based businessman Peter Lim has completed a significant investment in the company. Lim, a successful business leader and philanthropist in Singapore, joins the McLaren Automotive Board of Directors with immediate effect. </p>
<p class="ExternalClassC5655177CFAD4A5E8F34C56BF570231D">With Peter Lim’s investment, McLaren marks another major milestone in its global growth strategy. The introduction to the McLaren Automotive board of an influential and well respected partner in Asia will strengthen the company’s corporate and trading influence in the region at a time of encouraging demand for the company’s first ‘pure’ McLaren sports car, the MP4-12C. Demand is strong with the retailers in the Asia-Pacific region confirming orders that account for around 18 months of production. </p>
<p class="ExternalClassC5655177CFAD4A5E8F34C56BF570231D">Ron Dennis, Executive Chairman of McLaren Automotive and McLaren Group said:  “On behalf of the McLaren Automotive board, I welcome Peter Lim to McLaren and look forward to working closely with him as our company expands into the Asia region. </p>
<p class="ExternalClassC5655177CFAD4A5E8F34C56BF570231D">“This is a very exciting time for us and, as part of our growth strategy, we have been absolutely rigorous in ensuring that the right partners join us; those who are focused on supporting McLaren Automotive through investment that generates strong returns and strategic growth for the future. Peter Lim’s track record in Asia as a highly respected business leader adds further quality to our board in this highly competitive business environment at an exciting time for the company.” <br>
  <br>
With the launch of the first in the range of McLaren sports cars, the MP4-12C, through a brand new global retail network, McLaren is establishing itself as the world’s most exciting new sports car company. McLaren Automotive is focused on the development of a range of innovative, technologically ground-breaking, and bespoke high-performance sports cars, hand-built in a brand new manufacturing facility (the McLaren Production Centre) at its UK headquarters, and full of Formula 1-inspired technologies and development processes. </p>
<p class="ExternalClassC5655177CFAD4A5E8F34C56BF570231D">McLaren Automotive is designing, developing, and manufacturing a range of exclusive and premium ‘pure’ McLaren sports cars; selling and servicing the range through its global network of dedicated McLaren retailers. An initial network of 35 experienced retailer partners with a reputation for excellent customer service, and a passion for McLaren’s vision, will represent McLaren across 19 countries worldwide in 2011, including Hong Kong, Japan, and Singapore. McLaren retailers have started distributing the first MP4-12Cs to customers in the UK and mainland Europe, with distribution in the Asia-Pacific region anticipated from late-2011. The retail network is set to expand conservatively from 2012, including further growth in the Asia region.</p>

Dick Glover, Technical Director at McLaren Automotive, enjoyed 12 years at McLaren Racing where, among his many achievements, he designed the Formula 1 simulator that has also been used in the 12C development programme. “We’re intensely proud of the 12C,” said Dick. “The really exciting challenge for us was that to set new performance benchmarks, we had to introduce innovative new technologies. In that respect, we have worked like a Formula 1 team where you are constantly trying to improve performance, not against fixed parameters, but to win against competitors who are also constantly improving.</p>

On March 5, 1981 McLaren Racing introduced the carbon monocoque to Formula 1 in the McLaren MP4/1: it offered an unbeatable combination of strength and lightness. It had an immediate and dynamic impact, with John Watson winning the 1981 British Grand Prix at Silverstone. It also proved an effective safety cell, with Watson walking away from a dramatic high-speed crash at Monza later that season. Within a few years, every other Formula 1 team on the grid had followed suit. McLaren’s place as carbon innovators was sealed, every car we have produced since has had a carbon fibre chassis. </p>

<p class="ExternalClassA2D87D3BA3A5485E8E7529F3F2611414">John Watson said: “The MP4/1’s safety cell almost certainly saved my life. But I am convinced it also contributed to McLaren getting back to winning ways after a very lean spell. It was hugely exciting to be part of what felt like a revolution and amazing really to think that not only did all racing teams follow McLaren’s lead, but that McLaren has stuck to carbon so religiously in everything it has done.&quot; <br>

The launch of the 12C heralds not only the first sub-£200,000 road car based on a carbon chassis, but also, through industrialization of the production processes, potentially kick-starts the era of carbon chassis in more ‘everyday’ cars.</p>

The automotive media world have been buzzing with excitement as it gets its first taste of the innovative new MP4-12C.<br>

<img alt="" src="http://www.mclarenautomotive.com/uk/insider/Lists/Photos/Car%20Magazine.jpg"><br>
CAR magazine, the prestigious and influential monthly, brought forward its on-sale date by 24 hours in a bid to publish the story first in the UK. <br>
<br>
“The launch of the MP4-12C is the story of 2011. It’s the motoring equivalent of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding,” said editor Phil McNamara. <br>
 <br>
“Unusually, we’ve dedicated our entire cover to the MP4-12C, to showcase our 15-page first drive inside and we’re backing this up with McLaren week at Carmagazine.co.uk, with videos, wallpapers, polls and more special features to celebrate the launch of this benchmark sports car.”<br>
 <br>
McLaren Automotive invited CAR magazine to Portugal in late January, to test MP4-12C prototypes on both road and track. <br>
 <br>
CAR’s experienced road tester Chris Chilton, who has driven every significant supercar dating back to the McLaren F1 and Ferrari F40, drove the MP4-12C, and revelled in a hot lap with Jenson Button. “It feels so monstrously fast...and it sounds better than any turbocharged car I can remember,” wrote Chilton. “The MP4-12C rides well but offers a handling balance that’s truly exploitable, that flatters novices yet is still fun for Jenson Button.”<br>

To deliver a true McLaren sports car, and, frankly, a reason to exist amongst great competition, it was clear we needed a unique concept that offered tangible advantages.  With a unique carbon chassis as the foundation, and a powerful, but highly efficient McLaren engine at its heart, the 12C offers staggering value: no other carbon-based car can compete at this price-point, or with the 12C’s technology and performance. With the foundations in place, the MPC structure is beginning to emerge, with a staggering 2,250 breeze blocks being placed each day. When work starts on the interior, 200,000 floor tiles will be laid, enough to stretch from this site to McLaren London’s future home in Knightsbridge.<br>

<p class="ExternalClass1221602AEB8047B7B5E17F45627F49C6">McLaren Automotive has unveiled the groundbreaking MP4-12C in North America at the world-famous Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The car took centre stage at three key locations over the weekend.<br>
<br>
<img alt="" src="http://www.mclarenautomotive.com/uk/insider/Lists/Photos/Pebble%20Beach%20Coast%20420%20boarder.jpg"><br>
The official presentation of the 12C was made by McLaren Automotive’s Managing Director Antony Sheriff, opening the Gooding &amp; Company auction of classic sports cars on Friday. Included in the auction was one of just 72 iconic McLaren F1 road cars. Regarded by many as the greatest sports car ever built, this example, chassis number 62, was sold by Gooding &amp; Company on Sunday for $3,250,000.<br>
<br>
<img alt="" src="http://www.mclarenautomotive.com/uk/insider/Lists/Photos/Pebble%20Beach%20Lawn%20420%20boarder.jpg"><br>
The same Supernova Silver 12C was then displayed on the famous Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance Concept Car Lawn during Saturday and Sunday. Taking pride of place, and with the honour of being the first car on the lawn, its arrival drew crowds and gave North American car enthusiasts the first opportunity to see (and hear) the 12C in action.<br>

McLaren Automotive’s Design Director, Frank Stephenson, discusses the 12C with Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger.<br>
<br>
A Titanium Silver 12C and the XP13 rolling chassis were also presented to over 1,000 guests, including Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger and world-famous car collector, Jay Leno, in McLaren Automotive’s hospitality tent at a genuinely unique location. McLaren Automotive enjoyed a high-profile position overlooking the famous 18th fairway.<br>
<br>
Antony Sheriff, McLaren Automotive’s New York-born managing director, said:<br>
“Launching the 12C at Pebble Beach and the Gooding &amp; Company auction was a huge success. The feedback from visitors was simply phenomenal, and being able to make that direct link to our unique road car heritage with the presence of a McLaren F1 at the event was very special.” </p>

<p>Together with the Jardine Motors Group, we are delighted to confirm that the showroom for McLaren London will be located in the stunning landmark location, One Hyde Park. Situated at the top of Sloane Street in the heart of Knightsbridge, between Harvey Nichols and Harrods, McLaren London will be positioned on the ground floor of pavilion B, the largest of three retail spaces.</p>
<p>Sinan Omer, Brand Manager of McLaren London said “Securing One Hyde Park as our showroom is the icing on the cake, and will give us a home that is befitting of McLaren’s sports cars: like the company’s headquarters, it continues the important McLaren tradition of presenting the company from a stunning facility that is both visually impressive and absolutely fit for purpose.”</p>
<p><img alt="" src="http://www.mclarenautomotive.com/uk/insider/Lists/Photos/London%20Showroom%201%20420%20Border.jpg"><br>

The showroom will acknowledge the racing lineage and the Formula 1 inspired technology incorporated in the MP4-12C, displaying a McLaren Formula 1 car. McLaren London is anticipated to be McLaren Automotive’s leading European retailer and, potentially, the busiest in the global network when it opens in early 2011.</p>

Motorsport fans will also be excited at the prospect of seeing the 1995 24 heures du Mans winning McLaren F1. GTR1 won the legendary endurance race on its debut, securing McLaren a unique ‘triple crown’. To date, no other manufacturer has won the Formula 1 World Championship, the Indianapolis 500 and Le Mans 24 Hours. This iconic car will be on the McLaren Automotive stand throughout the weekend.<br>

Antony Sheriff (our Managing Director) commented: “This is a landmark day for McLaren Automotive as we confirm the locations of the first of our partners that will represent us around the world. It has been incredibly encouraging to experience the demand to sell McLarens from the world’s best car retailers – in every country in which we planned to launch and at the heart of all performance car markets. <br>
 “Our business will succeed on our ability to exceed our customers’ expectations - for technologically advanced cars, great quality and reliability, and excellent relations with their retailers. Our aims are simple: to offer the best cars and service ever seen in this demanding market.”<br>
“Therefore, our challenge has been to find retail partners with the same attitudes as McLaren – an absolute focus on being the best that is inherent in everything we do and a natural result of our successful motor racing heritage.” </p>

<p class="ExternalClass49757DC06C014CA1850AA68CA1FB3912">McLaren Automotive is currently testing Validation Prototype (VP) cars at several locations around the world. A number of these cars have been built specifically to test the 12C’s levels of dynamic performance. Chief Test Driver Chris Goodwin has been evaluating all aspects of 12C prototype performance since the first concept phase vehicle was built at the McLaren Technology Centre, and he’s currently working on a test programme at Applus IDIADA in Northern Spain. Chris explains here how the 12C is already achieving its dynamic performance targets.<br>

<p class="ExternalClass49757DC06C014CA1850AA68CA1FB3912">“We’re at a phase now where these prototypes are performing incredibly well and I’m loving every minute of being out here with the engineers and technicians working on the launch of the 12C.</p>
<p class="ExternalClass49757DC06C014CA1850AA68CA1FB3912">“Every technical feature of the car has been designed to deliver outstanding ride, handling, straight-line performance and safety. The Carbon MonoCell was introduced to early prototype cars and because it weighs less than 80kg, the car at that point felt dramatically lighter and therefore more agile. Since then, a bespoke suspension system and features like Brake Steer have been tuned to ensure that when calibrated together, we have a car that promises to beat its direct competition in those areas when it launches in 2011.”<br>

<p class="teaserbreak">[--Teaser break--]</p>
On the high speed bowl here at IDIADA, the 12C VP car is exceptionally stable even above 300kph. On the dynamic platform, the chassis electronics are helpful, but not intrusive and we are seeing great results on the handling course.  An equal amount of work has been put into the low speed drivability of the 12C. On the public roads around here, it feels comfortable and unintimidating. I could drive it all day.
<p> </p>
<p class="ExternalClass49757DC06C014CA1850AA68CA1FB3912">“There is still a way to go in developing the car. We have programmes planned to further test it in extreme hot and cold conditions, as well as to fine-tune subjective areas like in-car noise and cooling systems. We’re getting very close and I’m looking forward to handing over the results of this project to our first customers.”</p>

<p>Production of MP4-12C Validation Prototypes (VP) is now under way at the McLaren Technology Centre. Offering the best indication yet of the 12C’s production readiness, these models are successors to the all-black XP Beta-phase cars, and feature the very latest versions of technologies developed specifically for the 12C. Interior textiles and exterior paint finishes are also applied so that McLaren Automotive’s designers, engineers and manufacturing personnel are able to holistically appraise the newest members of the 12C concept-phase fleet.</p>
<p>As you might expect, these are exciting times for those involved in the 12C launch project.</p>

<p>Neil Patterson, Chief Engineer at McLaren Automotive, reflects on his role in creating the lightest high performance sports car in its class: </p>
<p>“From the start, it has been my responsibility to ensure that not one gram is added to the structure of the 12C unnecessarily. When designs are complete, we try to find an extra 5% mass saving. Where we have to accept an increase in one area, we don’t give up - we look to reduce or reclaim it elsewhere.”</p>
<p>“Starting with the unique carbon fibre MonoCell, the lightest and stiffest body structure design in its class, our integrated approach has meant that we are on target to deliver the 12C at least 75 kilos lighter than any competitor car – truly impressive when you consider the level of safety and features as standard.&quot;</p>
<p><img alt="" src="http://www.mclarenautomotive.com/uk/insider/Lists/Photos/IMGP4009-420.JPG"></p>
<p>“We’ve not only considered how much weight we have but also <i>where</i> we have it. We’ve favoured reductions at the extremities of the car over those near the centre of gravity. This has reduced the “polar moment of inertia” of the car, meaning that the 12C’s willingness to change direction is improved, giving a quick response to steering inputs.”</p>
<p>“The VP cars now being built are the closest yet to production-ready iterations of the 12C, and it is enormously satisfying to see the team’s collective engineering efforts being realised. The benefit to fuel efficiency and CO2 output from a lightweight car is clear, and the 12C aims to be best in class on both counts. Thanks to the light weight and low polar moment of inertia, when the first owner takes delivery of the new 12C they will own a car that delivers unparalleled levels of dynamic performance.”</p>

<p class="ExternalClass57E72570E85E405A93569EFDCAD0F237">The testing and development team at McLaren Automotive blends experience in developing Championship-winning Formula 1 cars and a unique, innovative approach to designing high performance sports cars.  The engineers responsible for each of the technologies bespoke to the MP4-12C are always seeking new ways to refine these components and when calibrated together in the 12C, they are tested to the absolute limit.  This intensive approach to testing products and systems requires the very best test drivers.  For that reason, McLaren Automotive’s Chief Test Driver Chris Goodwin was asked to introduce 2008 Formula 1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton and 2009 Champion Jenson Button to the MP4-12C at Goodwood Motor Circuit in the south of England on 02 March 2010.  Programme Director Mark Vinnels led a team of 15 Vehicle Development Managers and Technicians to the famous British race circuit to support the exciting track session, which was Jenson and Lewis’ first experience behind the wheel of the XP (Experimental Prototype) 12Cs. </p>

Jenson Button comments on his debut in XP10:<br>
“I like that there is no switchgear on the steering wheel. You simply select the mode you want using the Active Dynamics Panel and after that there is no need to concentrate on anything but driving. Within just a few laps I was very comfortable with the car and I was pushing hard through corners. It’s very quick in a straight line too and the only problem I had driving the 12C on a race circuit was remembering that it is a road car!”<br>
<br>
Lewis Hamilton describs his first driving impressions of a 12C prototype:<br>
“The visibility is great from the driver’s seat. You really appreciate that in tight corners. I love the McLaren F1 and like that car, the huge front windscreen of the 12C allows you to take in all of the information you need to judge the perfect line through apex turns. The 12C team at Goodwood told me that they are aiming to make the best performance car on the market. After driving an XP car, I’m convinced that is exactly what they will do.”</p>
