ENGINE PERFORMANCE

A bespoke V8 engine more power-efficient than a hybrid

The MP4-12C’s class-leading combination of pure performance and efficiency could only be achieved by designing our own M838T engine from scratch. Freed from the constraints of having to use another manufacturer’s parts, we applied McLaren’s design methodologies to create an engine that defies sports car conventions.

High-powered fuel efficiency

Smaller capacity, light weight, high efficiency. The 3.8l V8, twin-turbocharged engine produces abundant torque throughout the 8,500rpm rev range; 80% of the M838T’s torque is available below 2,000rpm for extreme acceleration without having to bury the throttle. It is guaranteed to deliver maximum driving enjoyment around town, and serious exhilaration at full speed.

Yet, despite its potency, the McLaren engine produces the highest horsepower-to-CO2 ratio of any car with an internal combustion or hybrid engine. The 12C driver doesn’t have to choose between power and efficiency: they get both.

Lightweight and compact

The mid-mounted engine was also the focus of our obsession with weight. As well as being compact, and therefore inherently lighter, we used lightweight materials to save precious kilograms, including Nikasil-coated aluminium liners. The dry sump and flat-plane crankshaft design also allowed us to position it low in the chassis, helping us to achieve the 12C’s low centre of gravity and significantly contributing to its class-leading road-handling.
