Our DNA
MP4-8
Breakthrough engine management and telemetry
Our 1993 season Formula 1 car, the MP4-8, represented a major leap forward in McLaren’s use of automotive electronic systems.
With Honda quitting Formula 1 that year, McLaren was forced to use a proprietary Ford Cosworth engine, rather than a bespoke unit. Although it was reliable and fuel efficient, it was less powerful than we had expected. We hoped its shortcomings could be balanced with even better preparation, a superb chassis and our new and highly sophisticated TAG electronic systems.
A huge leap forward
Designed and manufactured exclusively for us by McLaren Group member TAG Electronic Systems, the systems were accompanied by a new, lightweight electronic control panel in the cockpit.
The MP4-8 bristled with cutting-edge electronic innovations, including new engine management software, semi-automatic transmission, active suspension, traction control, data acquisition and telemetry. It was the first car on the grid to be so comprehensively equipped.
Electronic pioneer
In the hands of three-time World Champion Ayrton Senna, the MP4-8 powered to five victories, with Senna and McLaren coming second in both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships. As well as being a respectable result for McLaren, the MP4-8’s level of electronic sophistication set the blueprint for what followed.
