DRIVING AMBITION - THE FULL STORY OF THE McLAREN F1
The McLaren F1 was conceived in 1988, when Ron Dennis, Mansour Ojjeh, Creighton Brown and Gordon Murray sat in an Italian airport lounge waiting for a delayed flight. By the time the flight took off, Ron Dennis and Mansour Ojjeh had made a bold and uncompromising decision.
McLaren, already a dominant force in Grand Prix racing would build the finest performance car in the world.
Within four years they had succeeded, and the results were spectacular:
- In December 1992, just 34 months after the design team came together, the first prototype McLaren F1 was driven
- In December 1993, the first production F1 was completed
- In June1995, the GTR racing version won Le Mans on its debut, taking four of the top five places
- In March 1998 the F1 established a new speed record for a production car at 240.1 mph (386.7 kph)
- In June 1998, the last F1 was completed, a total of just 100 cars
Driving Ambition is the story of this extraordinary car. Created by Doug Nye with the full co-operation of McLaren, Driving Ambition is the story of a pursuit of excellence. It is not a sanitised corporate history, but a human story full of anecdotes and humour.
Driving Ambition captures the spirit and the story of the McLaren F1 - a book for anyone who has ever understood the vision, the passion and the power of beautiful, fast cars.
