Q & A - WORKING AT McLAREN AUTOMOTIVE
Where do you advertise your vacancies?
All our positions are advertised in the McLaren Automotive Website, as well as in local newspapers and recruitment agencies. You can either apply by sending your application, accompanied by a cover letter and salary expectation to the following email address mcl.jobs@mclaren.com or to Human Resources Department, McLaren Automotive Limited, McLaren Technology Center, Chertsey Road, Woking, Surrey, GU21 4YH.
However, we do receive an enormous number of unsolicited employment applications and letters and would urge you strongly not to write to us unless you are applying, and have the necessary qualifications, for a specific post.
Do you offer apprenticeships or sponsorship for students?
Unfortunately, we do not currently run any form of apprenticeship schemes, as we tend to recruit individuals who already have experience in the field. We are also unable to currently offer any sponsorship to undergraduates or students, but if the situation does change, details will be posted here.
Do you offer Industrial Placements or Internships?
We are really interested in highly motivated individuals, who aim to express their dynamism and creation in order to become leaders in their field and in McLaren Automotive, in particular. We do operate a limited number of Industrial Placements and Internships each year. Students have the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the Automotive Industry and be productive.
Industrial Placements and Internships are available in the following business areas: Engineering, Purchase, Production Management, Logistics, Information Technology, Finance and Manufacturing Engineering. We do receive a huge response each year and try to make our selection based on skills, experience and field that the student is interested in. Therefore, we cannot guarantee that placements are always available in every business area mentioned above.
What are some of the other roles available?
Our IT department employs IT specialists for running our systems as well as upgrading hardware and software. Formal IT Qualifications (HND or Degree) are required accompanied with experience. However, we also have a strong Engineering Department (Body, Electrical, Interior, Chassis, Powertrain), Manufacturing, Quality, Purchasing/Logistics department, as well as the usual “service” departments for a company of this size e.g. Finance and Human Resources.
Qualifications required for Engineering are either a degree in Mechanical, Automotive Engineering or equivalent. For all of these posts, we would look for the relevant professional qualifications and previous experience of the role to be undertaken.
Do you have a work experience scheme?
We do operate a limited work experience scheme for school pupils within our business. Students are able to spend several days in some of our key departments, e.g. Manufacturing, Engineering and Purchasing, but at times this may not be possible due to sensitive and confidential work taking place within the business.
Can I arrange a facility visit?
Due to confidential nature of our business, and the deadlines involved in the production of our cars, we are unable to permit facility or office visits to members of the general public. Team McLaren members have the chance to visit the facility. For more information on Team McLaren membership, click here >>
What are the key roles in Manufacturing?
Manufacturing and operations are where the bulk of our people are employed. We are always really proud of our manufacturing team and interested in employing people who want to contribute to consolidating the past success of McLaren and ensuring that we retain our prime position for the future.
Our Composites facility is responsible for both the manufacture and assembly of carbon fibre components which when fitted together form the body and safety cell of the SLR. All our Composites engineers are qualified to degree level in associated subjects whilst the shopfloor technicians come from a variety of educational and working backgrounds.
Then, in turn, our highly qualified Paint shop team paints the carbon fibre bodies to support SLR production to the highest possible quality standards. Fully skilled automotive paintsprayers with at least City and Guilds/NVQ in vehicle painting.
When our paint shop team has finished their job, our Production team has to get involved. They assemble and manufacture the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, which is a high performance sports vehicle with very high standards of quality and performance. A mixture of skill levels with a minimum of City and Guilds/NVQ in motor vehicle maintenance. A vast range of engineering skills are also considered including Aerospace Industry.
